Handicrafts of India

अभिनन्दन from Gaatha

Gaatha project was originally conjured only for researching and documenting the rapid erosion of Indian craft clusters and heritage. However, we soon learnt from the artisans themselves that need was not to do research alone, but to restore ‘pride and serious commercial opportunity’ in their ecosystem. Today Gaatha thus aims to bring the lost respect and wealth back to these beautiful and aesthetically rich Indian handicraft clusters. These researches are important because just like Industrial goods sell on ‘features’, crafts sell on the processes / stories / heritage that go into making them.

We should give crafts a fair chance, someone is right now merrily making something for us, singing a folk song, in a humble house, deep inside India.

The Ghotul in the Muria tribe is a traditional you The Ghotul in the Muria tribe is a traditional youth dormitory and an important social and cultural institution. It is a place where unmarried boys and girls gather in the evenings to learn discipline, community values, songs, dances, craft skills, and tribal customs. Under the guidance of senior members, the Ghotul teaches cooperation, respect, and responsibility while creating a strong sense of belonging among the youth. It also plays a key role in preserving oral traditions, festivals, and rituals, making it essential for Muria identity and cultural continuity. Many books describe the Ghotul as a space where young people also learn about relationships and sexuality in an open and accepting environment. Because of its importance in Muria life, young people try their best to make the Ghotul a memorable place. The Ghotul has also inspired artistic creativity, especially in personal adornment, wall painting, and woodcarving. Decorating spaces with paintings is not new. Even their ancestors, thousands of years ago, painted the walls of rock caves to express life around them. With time, these traditions are slowly fading. Ghotuls have become rare, and Muria paintings are also disappearing. Only during certain festivals do these art forms come alive in the form of Jagar. As vernacular architecture disappears and concrete houses take over, the places that once held these paintings are vanishing as well. We do not know if one day even Jagar will be replaced by shiny printed posters or perhaps a OLED screen.

Jab Bhagwaan bhi maangta hai… Do they really ne Jab Bhagwaan bhi maangta hai… Do they really need anything? How can a Bhagwaan beg when divinity is supposed to have everything? But then you remember that old story and the song “Tere dwar khada Bhagwaan, bhagat bhar de re jholi,” where Lord Vaman himself opens his jholi, asking King Bali for alms. And you wonder... maybe even he wanted more. Look around, we too see people who have everything, yet are still searching for more. Those who dress up as gods, goddesses, or mythological figures and perform or beg are known in India as Behrupiyas. Once a vibrant and celebrated tradition, this art form is now fading, with most of its artists struggling to survive. There was a time when Behrupiyas would appear suddenly at weddings and festivals, disguised as policemen, gods, priests, or mythic heroes,  creating moments of surprise and awe. Today, in a world where AI can transform anything into something else, perhaps the Behrupiya was the earliest and most human version of transformation. What remains now is heartbreaking...children, a symbols of divine play, seen begging in the form of those who were believed to have everything. No # tag
