Handicrafts of India

अभिनन्दन from Gaatha

Gaatha project was originally conjured only for researching and documenting the rapid erosion of Indian craft clusters and heritage. However, we soon learnt from the artisans themselves that need was not to do research alone, but to restore ‘pride and serious commercial opportunity’ in their ecosystem. Today Gaatha thus aims to bring the lost respect and wealth back to these beautiful and aesthetically rich Indian handicraft clusters. These researches are important because just like Industrial goods sell on ‘features’, crafts sell on the processes / stories / heritage that go into making them.

We should give crafts a fair chance, someone is right now merrily making something for us, singing a folk song, in a humble house, deep inside India.

Some things never fade, even after centuries. They Some things never fade, even after centuries.
They are timeless…so deeply Indian that no matter where you place them in the world, they carry a whisper of Indianness with them. With age or changing lifestyles, our choices may evolve, but these simple things never lose their charm. As Diwali approaches, we see countless new options in the market. Yet, the festival’s true essence remains incomplete without the silent contribution of three humble communities...the Kumhar, the Halwai, and the Maali (or Kisaan). Clay diyas, local sweets, and genda flowers...can we even imagine Diwali without them? At first, we may overlook their importance, but when we pause and think, we realize—they still find their way into almost every home. Yes, the market overflows with modern offerings, and glossy ads may tempt us with western clothes and packaged sweets. But as the festival draws near, our hearts know where to go, we step into local bazaars to pick diyas, sweets, and flowers that bring back the soul of Diwali. Because no matter what’s trending, Diwali still smells like mitti, ghee, and marigolds, right? #festivevibes #diwali #gaatha #localcommunities #indialove #localflavor #indianculture

Somehow, in taking inspiration and recreating, we Somehow, in taking inspiration and recreating, we often lose originality. In today’s digital age, when every mind is flooded with visuals from smartphones and social media, our subconscious is constantly influenced by other narratives. In earlier times, people were far more attuned to developing their own distinct styles. Theyyam is one of the finest examples of this originality—an art form with over 400 unique variations, each celebrated for its grandeur and profound spiritual depth. Beyond its striking costumes, ornaments, and weapons, the most defining element is its elaborate facial art, known as Mukhatezhuth. Mukhatezhuth is the intricate face painting that transforms a performer into the divine. Every form of Theyyam has its own unique design, made entirely from natural pigments: Arimaav (ground rice paste, for white), Manjal (turmeric, for yellow), Mazhi (soot from sesame oil lamps, for black), Manayoola (crushed green leaves, for green) ,Chaayiliam ( natural pigment, for orange). These pigments are blended with bases like Velichenna (coconut oil) and Elaneer Vellam (tender coconut water), ensuring that the sacred drawings endure through long hours of dance, sweat, and ritual. But Mukhatezhuth is not merely decoration, it is transformation. Each face painting carries symbolic meaning, allowing mortal bodies to embody gods, goddesses, and mythical beings. - Karim Chamundi represents the fierce Mother Goddess, invoked to ward off evil. - Vishnumoorty, among the most popular Theyyams, narrates Lord Vishnu’s Narasimha avatar - Muthappan Thiruvappan stands apart, being worshipped daily in shrines and blending folk traditions with Bhakti devotion. - Wayanadu Theyyam reflects the local myths and legends of Wayanad, carrying forward distinct regional beliefs. Originating in the Kolathunadu region of North Malabar, Kerala, and still practiced in parts of South Canara and Kodagu (Karnataka), Theyyam is a living ritual tradition that stretches back thousands of years. Performed between October and March, it is rooted in the communities of Vannan, Malayan, Mavilan, Velan, Munnoottan, Anjunnoottan, Pulayar, Kopalar, and others. #theyyam #indialove #gaatha
